Northern Circuit Route

Northern Circuit Route

Safari Overview

The Northern Circuit represents Kilimanjaro's newest and lengthiest route, providing unparalleled panoramic views of the mountain from all sides. Despite its length, many consider it the easiest due to its gradual pace and excellent acclimatization opportunities. However, novices to long treks may find the 8-day journey more demanding. With fewer crowds, it offers a more intimate climb amidst stunning landscapes and unique flora. Ascending through lush forests to alpine deserts, the journey culminates in a mesmerizing summit of Uhuru Peak, where a magnificent sunrise and iconic glaciers await. For the adventurous, an optional night in the Crater promises a truly unforgettable experience.

Day 1 HIGH-ALTITUDE DROP OFF DESTINATION AND TREKKING TO SHIRA 1 CAMP

In the morning, your guide and climbing support team will convene at your hotel for a final briefing. Then, you'll embark on a 3-4 hour drive to Kilimanjaro National Park's western entrance, Londorossi Gate (2,250 meters / 7,380 feet).

After obtaining climbing permits and registering with the search and rescue service, your group will continue by vehicle to the drop-off point (3,610 meters / 11,841 feet). Here, you'll be greeted by breathtaking views of the Shira Plateau.

The journey from the drop-off point to your first high-altitude camp (Shira 1) involves a gradual gain in altitude and is not overly strenuous. This allows for proper acclimatization. Upon reaching camp, your climbing team will have everything prepared for a relaxing evening: tents pitched, chairs set up, and a hearty dinner ready.

Please Note:

This marks your first day at high altitude, so it's crucial to follow these guidelines:
- Consume over 4 liters of bottled water daily, in small, frequent amounts.
- Consider using high-altitude medication to alleviate symptoms of altitude sickness; consult your doctor beforehand.
- Be mindful of symptoms such as headache or nausea, indicating altitude sickness. Inform your guide immediately if you experience any discomfort.

Day 2 SHIRA 1 TO SHIRA 2 TREK

On this day, you'll continue your ascent from Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp, with a modest altitude gain of 240 meters (787 feet). The trek's manageable intensity affords you ample time and energy to marvel at Kilimanjaro's breathtaking vistas, unique flora, and, weather permitting, panoramic views of Mount Meru, the fifth-highest peak in Africa.

**Please Note:** Following lunch, a 2-hour rest is scheduled. Afterward, you're encouraged to embark on an acclimatization hike towards Lava Tower, where you'll ascend an additional 260 meters (853 feet) in altitude, aiding in your adjustment to the higher elevation.

Day 3 SHIRA 2 TO MOIR HUT VIA LAVA TOWER TREK

Following breakfast, your group will leave Shira 2 Camp (3,850 meters / 12,628 feet) and trek towards Lava Tower (4,600 meters / 15,088 feet).

This leg of the journey presents a notable challenge for climbers, with many finding it more physically demanding than previous days. As a result, your team will pause for a lunch break upon reaching Lava Tower.

After lunch and a brief rest, your group will continue the ascent to slightly higher elevations before descending to Moir Hut Camp.

Day 4 TREKKING FROM MOIR HUT TO BUFFALO CAMP

Today's journey entails a lengthy yet manageable trek. Exiting Moir Valley, where you spent the night, involves a brief, steep ascent, followed by a scenic hike along Kilimanjaro's northern slope. While there will be some uphill and downhill sections throughout the day, there are no significant altitude gains.

This route skirts the border with Kenya, offering captivating vistas of the Tsavo and Amboseli valleys.

Day 5 TREKKING FROM BUFFALO CAMP TO 3RD CAVE CAMP

Today's trek concludes as you ascend the northern slope of Kilimanjaro, reaching 3rd Cave Camp where the trail intersects with the traditional Rongai route. Trekking distances are shorter compared to the previous day, allowing your body ample time to acclimate to the altitude of 3,800 meters (12,464 feet), promoting overall physical comfort and well-being.

Day 6 TREKKING FROM 3RD CAVE CAMP TO SCHOOL HUT

Today's journey entails trekking to the School Hut Summit Camp (4,800 meters / 15,744 feet), where you'll prepare for the final ascent to Kilimanjaro's summit. While the trek itself isn't overly challenging, maintaining a steady pace is advised to conserve energy for the summit push. Upon reaching the camp, it's recommended to rest early, avoid strenuous activities, and stay hydrated. Tonight, you'll awaken before dawn to embark on the ultimate trek to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters / 19,336 feet), marking the pinnacle of your Kilimanjaro adventure.

Day 7 ASCENT TO UHURU PEAK AND DESCENT TO MILLENNIUM CAMP

During the summit night, your safety remains our utmost priority, with one guide assigned for every two climbers. Guides closely monitor climbers' health as they ascend Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters / 19,336 feet) from School Hut Summit Camp (4,800 meters / 15,744 feet) around midnight. While technically straightforward, the high altitude increases the perceived difficulty.

After a successful summit, explore the nearby glaciers before descending to Barafu Camp for a two-hour lunch and rest break. The descent continues to Millenium Camp (3,950 meters / 12,956 feet) for an overnight stay.

PLEASE NOTE: Vigilance during descent is crucial as 9 out of 10 accidents occur during this phase. Watch your step to prevent falls, injuries, and toe damage.
