This 4-day trek begins with an early start from Karatu or Mto wa Mbu, driving through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area to the Olmoti Crater. Hike to the crater rim for breathtaking views before continuing to Bulati camp. Trek to the Empakai Crater, camping on the crater rim and exploring Empakai Lake. The journey continues through the highlands to Acacia Camp, ending with a descent to Lake Natron. Each day offers unique landscapes, cultural insights, and opportunities to spot wildlife.
4 Days Ngorongoro Highland Trek Route

Day to day description

Arrival Mto Wa Mbu/Karatu - Ngorongoro Crater Rim - Olmoti & Empakai

Start your journey early from Karatu or Mto wa Mbu and drive north through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area on a scenic road to the base of Olmoti Crater near Nainokanoka ranger post, where you'll meet your armed ranger. Climb up (1 hour, low to medium fitness) to the Olmoti Crater rim to enjoy the stunning views. Continue driving to Bulati camp, with the option to hike (4-5 hours, medium fitness, time permitting) or drive to Empakai Crater. Set up camp on the Empakai Crater rim. If time permits, descend into Empakai Crater to visit the beautiful Empakai Lake (1-2 hours, low to medium fitness). Enjoy a well-deserved dinner and camp overnight under the stars.

Day 1 Empakai Crater - Acacia Camp

After breakfast, and if you haven't already, descend early into Empakai Crater to explore the lush surroundings and the serene Empakai Lake (1-2 hours, low to medium fitness). Begin your trek from the crater, journeying through the breathtaking Ngorongoro highlands towards Acacia Camp. Traverse diverse landscapes, from dense forests to open grasslands, and enjoy spotting wildlife such as zebras, gazelles, and various bird species. Take a break for a packed lunch along the way before arriving at Acacia Camp in the late afternoon. Set up your camp, enjoy a hearty dinner, and spend the night amidst the tranquil beauty of the highlands.

Day 2 Acacia Camp - Lake Natron

Start your day with an early breakfast at Acacia Camp before continuing your trek towards Lake Natron, descending from the highlands into the dramatic Rift Valley. Witness the landscape transform as you approach the alkaline waters of Lake Natron, home to large flocks of flamingos and unique geological features. Arrive at Lake Natron by mid-day, where you'll have lunch and a brief exploration of the lake area. Spend the afternoon relaxing and enjoying the stunning scenery before setting up your final camp.

Day 3 Lake Natron - Arusha/Kilimanjaro International Airport

Begin your day with a sunrise walk along the shores of Lake Natron, observing the flamingos and other wildlife in the early morning light. After breakfast, you can explore nearby waterfalls or take a dip in natural pools to cool off. Enjoy a leisurely lunch before packing up and preparing for the journey back. Depart Lake Natron and drive back to Karatu or Mto wa Mbu, arriving in the late afternoon or early evening, concluding your unforgettable Ngorongoro Highlands trekking adventure.

- Special camping safaris include a tent, mattress, camping equipment, and a personal cook (sharing for even-numbered groups + 1 single tent for odd numbers) with a private - portable camping shower and toilet for use at special campsites. 

- Budget, medium, and high-range safaris include full board (or half board/bed and breakfast if indicated) accommodation (sharing or single with a supplement).
